This has been discussed before on this newsgroup and in many other
places, so a google search would be instructive, but briefly:

The general explanations have nothing to do with controlling population
size, and given the generally accepted range of percentage homosexuals in
the population this would not be effective in controlling population
size.

Results of twin studies show that homosexuality has a genetic component
(if one twin is homosexual, the other twin is more likely to be
homosexual if they are identical than if they are fraternal twins). But
the correlation is far from 100% for identical twins, so environment
plays a significant part in homosexuality.

The other interesting correlation for male homosexuals is with birth
order and family size - younger children in large families are more
likely to be homosexual.
