I seem to be making the transition from being an amateur molecular
biologist to being an amateur population genetics man. ;-) Lynch's
explanations seem much more plausible to me than Gilbert's.
And, for that matter, more plausible than my own molecular-oriented
speculations.
I seem to be cramming for a graduation from layman-totally-naive (LTN) to
layman-substantially-naive (LSN). But, in the meantime, I continue to hold
on to such weird convictions as: that correlations do not in every case
establish cause and effect. Most of the "old school" evolutionary theories
(those up until this century) strike me as unencumbered by such convictions.
But, alas, those working at the frontiers today, as reflected by sources of
the kind you provide links to with above (mostly snipped) posting, do indeed
seem to me to reflect that maybe all of my convictions are not wrong, after
all, and that researchers at the frontiers are actually looking for the
step-by-step mechanisms which may eventually connect some cause dots and
some effect dots together.
What is evolutionary biology at its best? What is happening NOW !
What a breath of fresh air for this LSNWB
(layman-substantially-less-naive-wanna-be), who is trying to get some sense
of where the answers are most likely to be found (as opposed to endless
wranglings about untestable veritable dogma and philosophical analyses of
the issues).
Thanks for a link to a breath of fresh air.
