PiP:-
Remember, we are talking here about peripatric or sympatric speciations.
Reviewing the jargon:
peripatric - allopatric where one of the two groups is very small

Well, strictly, it's when one small population is at the extreme end of the
parent metapopulation's range.

sympatric - local-niche isolation within same geographic area

No, sympatric means "in the same range or region". Speciation in sympatry
involves, it is claimed, local adaptation to novel niches or hosts, via
divergent selection.

allopatric - geographic isolation
...
Also there's:
parapatric - Continous range, but mostly local mating

Parapatry is everything in between complete allopatry and complete sympatry.
It involves some degree of migration/gene exchange between populations.

Whoops. I hadn't noticed that perIpatric and perApatric were two
different words.

Double whoops. Its pArApatric vs pErIpatric. As in 'parallel' vs
'perimeter'.

And I usually try to be such a paragon of correct spelling. I seem
to be becoming more of a perigon! ;-)

Me, I'm an orthogon.
