I come away from this reading more convinced than ever that
a 'Membranes First' approach to OOL is the only logical
possibility. 'Genes First' just doesn't make sense. As I
sketched in a series of postings to this group about a year
ago, the Membranes First viewpoint claims:
- Reproducing closed lipid vesicles appeared well before
nucleic acids, proteins, or any other conceivable
macro-molecules.
Would you talk about this a bit or better yet, suggest
a favorite URL on it? Who originated this idea?
- The organisms grew by fixing CO or CO2 into membrane lipids.
Why would growing be an advantage at this point?
