Been trying to find the definition of a "polymorphic gene." First did
a search for "genetic polymorphism" and got definitions that talked
about "in a population" when I want to know what it means in an
individual. Then I tried to search for "polymorphic gene" and found a
lot of hits but none that included a definition-- except one which
stated something so general as to be meaningless-- "a naturally
occuring variation in a gene" or something like that-- what I want to
know is what characteristics does a polymorphic gene have that a
non-polymorphic gene does not have?

If you want to look at polymorphic genes in individuals you probably
should look up allele. Polymorphism within a gene is usually used to
denote population level gene diversity. Haploid individuals can only
have one allele of a gene. Dipliods can have two different alleles,
triploids three alleles, tetraploids four alleles etc. Polymorphism is
alleleic diversity when you are talking about genes, so the terms are
often interchangable when talking about genetics.
