OUT OF EDEN
The peopling of the world
Book review by Anthony Campbell.
[Snip review] Nice reviewing job, btw.
In the US, this book is published under the title "The Real Eve:
Modern Man's Journey out of Africa". I read it a few months ago.
Interesting, and full of details. But opinionated - frequently
in the sneering Richard Dawkins kind of way that I find annoying.
(Still, I did appreciate the long digression on the academic infighting
regarding Clovis man.)
The book covers human evolution and migration roughly since 90 Ky ago.
It is a messy story, with lots of details, and Oppenheimer tries hard
to weave together the explanation of the evidence with the explanation
of the hypothesis into a coherent narrative. He doesn't quite succeed.
I found this book to be a tough read. But a worthwhile one.
