Habituation contrasted with Repression



To set the background against which I wish this comparison to be seen:
Consider that the brain or Nervous System or [if I allow myself to use an
approximately equivalent expression that emphasises how and what we do,
feel, and think, and that is a part of a fresh and etymologically pioneering
terminology] the "Actention System" [or, alternatively, the "Actention
Selection System" - in either version "actention" is nothing more fancy than
an amalgam of "activity" (which should in this context be taken to
approximately refer to anything from simple muscle-work involving reflexes
and to any most abstract and sophisticated analytical or creative
intellectual activity) and "attention"] is a biocomputer with a massively
parallel processing 'architecture';
one 'designed' by the Evolutionary Pressure Totality
[which I far from inEPTly have divided and
subdived into "pressures" of 'opportunity type'
(the in some sense primary type) and those of "adversity type".

Opportunity type evolutionary pressures (or ditto patterning potentials -
potentials obviously often realized) that are resulting in a new and
reproductively successful individual (or 'genophenotype') must of course
be a combination of intrinsic (cytochemical and physioanatomical in
kind) and extrinsic (environmental - e.g. a particular 'niche' available for
the taking).

It must be recognized that it is natural for different
"opportunity type evolutionary pressures" (OTEP) and different
"adversity type selection pressures" (ATSP) to near-enough simultaneously
be impacting or impending (be equally close to become realized evolved
biological - and psychobiological, etc. - patterns of What
Is~='spacetimenergy').

One general exemplification of this (explanatory philosophical) thinking is
that some physioanatomical traits can be used both for carrying out a
physical act of self-defence and for finding and/or securing the next meal;

Or that a tough skin or body armour can shield against a several kinds of
physical environmental threats whilst also allowing the taking of some
environmental opportunity to forage and for finding and/or fighting for a
mate.
(Though NOT an Australian mate! :-)).

Lastly, amongst the set of all conceivable ATSP that may coincide with OTEP,
there exist a (generically understood and defined) subset of adverse
stressors/situations/stimulation that "implore(s)" - in order to be
survived - that a thus adversely challanged individual must have a (already
inbuilt) capacity to be induced (by such "situations/stressors/stimulation")
to internally inhibit (as in to "repress" - IOW to "specifically
hibernate" - not "generally hibernate", which is the most conventional
meaning of the word "hibernation") its instinctive fear/distress/pain type
reaction (or ditto tendency to pay/focus actention) to _such_ a predicament
(i.e., situation/stressor/stimulation that fits into this subset of ATSP).

I have labelled the environmental aspects of those situations that fits this
subset of ATSP with the acronym SHITS.

And I have labeled the normally inevitably imprinted
neural aftereffects (Long-Term Potentiation of neurons with an most directly
distress generating excitatory output, and the likewise "conditioned-in"
synaptic gating of the susequent signaling by these permanently
hypersensitized neurons) with the acronym CURSES (alt. CCKHHURSES).

And I have summarized my perfectly science-aligned philosophical
interpretation of how we function behave and evolved (in respect of what
I have been outlining above) by the acronym AEVASIVE.

"Habituation" has been defined (or described - such as per Jane F.
Mackworh's book "Vigilance and habituation" Penguin 1969), *approximately*,
as the
active interneuronal inhibition [though it would not hurt to allow the
concept to
_also_ cover the even more trivial possibility that some neurons that fire
may
simply tire] of neurons whose firing is the most direct cause of anything
from a 'motor' to a 'mental'
reflex in response to some repeated insignificant (but quite possible
relevant)
sensory stimulation corresponding to some equally insignificant
environmental/situational
feature's (or features') influence.

"Repression", in contrast, could be described (approximately defined) as
the active interneuronal inhibition of neurons whose firing would be the
most direct
neural cause of painful/distressful/fear type motor/emotional/mental type
reflexes or preoccupations (or, in fewest possible words: self-defeatingly
distressful "actentions") in response to repeated adversely significant but
*soon to become 'irrelevant' because the individual would die
and/or not achieve reproductive survival if it did respond thus.

(Obviously, compared with habituation, in the case of repression the
inhibitory transmitter GABA (which guess/presume is involved in both
habituation and repression) is
*most characteristically* (and most opportunely/instructively - in respect
of how I contrived AEVASIVE) augmented by the various "endo(genous)opiates"
(or opioids).

I have attempted to represent this fact as far as possible when I contrived
"AEVASIVE".

It stands for "Ambiadvantageously Evolved Veritable Actention (Selection)
System Incorporating (amongst else, but very characteristically) Various
Endoopiates".
