Seems like even the simplest of the simple and accurate paper and
pencil models would have to take into account speciation. At some
point some memebers of the slime mold colony are going to be distinct
enough that they are no longer the same species of bug.
I think that this model would be able to explain the variability within
the human species itself, but not the variation between chimps and
humans. It seems like the selective preasure on species such as horses
and donkeys would penalize intraspecies breeding since the mule is an
infertile offspring, and genome drift would be encouraged between the
two species.
