Hard to say one variety of a species dying is evolution, what if the
drought goes away and the beaks get bigger due to getting nutrient at
crucial developmental cycles or epi-genetic effects.
That also would be evolution. There is nothing in the theory of
evolution that makes it a one way street, and evolution isn't
goal oriented in any case, it is just response to the environment.
If the enviroment changes, so must the response.
