Hypothesis: Genes only account for the basic building blocks in a
biological organism. Epigenetic coding, determined by the environment,
accounts for a much larger part of the complexity of an organism.
Biological inheritence, then, is not only passed on by genes, but also
by specific epigenetic coding determined by the environment in two
basic phases: during pregnancy and after pregnancy.
Therefore, biological inheritance is not merely caused by random
mutations, but also by epigenetic inheritance. The enviromnent for a
fetus is its mother, and during pregnancy the mother is providing the
complex blueprint needed for developing the fetus. The hypothesis
predicts that genes by themselves cannot provide the total amount of
information needed to develop a complex organism such as a human being.
After the child is born, even more advanced inheritance takes place in
the form of memes, such as learning a language and other skills
provided by the now even bigger environment in the form of the society
in which the child grows up.
When genetic inheritance is only the basic level of inheritance, and a
much more complex level of inheritance is provided by the mother who
acts as a template for the complex task of turning an embryo into a
newborn child, it makes inheritance and natural selection much more
effective than if only genes were responsible for biological evolution.
