This is indeed an interesting article, which is likely to substantially
change the way we think about evolution in eukaryotes. However, in my view
this is old news. Virtually the same conclusion was drawn by a very
well-known evolutionary biologist in a Science paper a few years ago.
Lynch, M., and J. S. Conery. 2003. The origins of genome complexity.
Science 302: 1401-1404.
This seems to reveal that a finding by bio-medical scientists explicitly
focusing on the implications for clinical human application is much more
likely to be heard than virtually the same finding by an evolutionary
biologist focusing on a bigger picture.
