Re: What is the evolutionary explanation of consciousness?

One person there was doodling on a scratch pad and making lots of loops and
circles and just held the pad up and said that PT boats could start at a
ship when a submarine had fired a torpedo at one of the ships, or sonar had
detected one, or whatever, and just go outward in a spiral...

Quite false --- or, at best, a very minor part
of the story.

Long story short, the U. S. Navy tried this and the result was so many
German submarines being destroyed that German Intelligence actually
speculated that the U. S. might have a new secret submarine detection
technology.

They did. Firstly, they (or essentially the British at
Bletchley Park) were breaking German Navy codes
and could locate the subs. Secondly, the Brits
(namely J.T. Randall and H.A.H. Boot) had invented
centimetric radar, and bombers with it could see
subs on the surface at night and through cloud.
That, in combination with yet another Brit invention
-- the use of brilliant lights fixed on attacking bombers
-- enabled the subs to be wiped out|, almost at will.

The Germans could not work out what was going
on because 'scientific doctrine' had established
that such short-wave radar beams could never be
generated, and they kept looking for the Allied
secret in all the wrong places. Randall and Boot
had found a way to generate 10 cm waves -- and
it is now the way microwave ovens work.
