In a model society with three types of participants - cheaters,
simple cooperators, and righteous cooperators who punish cheaters,
cooperation does not necessarily dominate. But add in a fourth type -
dropouts who choose not to even participate in the games - and now
cooperation (with or without punishment) may come to dominate.
Interesting, but I am beginning to think that by adjusting the
parameters in this kind of simulation you can get the results to
say whatever you want them to say.
