I've written a basic essay on species resurrection.

Resurrecting species that had previously been thought extinct now seems
to be quite technically possible.

Not a chance. All modern technologies require you to come up,
as a bare minimum, with chromosomes, not just with DNA sequences.
That means all the DNA methylation, all the histones and auxillary
proteins present in the right places in right amounts all with proper
modifications. No way.

Not to mention the most immediate and trivial obstacle that
we don't currently have technology of synthesizing DNA
that is on the order of 100,000,000 bp long.

However, the synthesis of viruses has to count as species
resurrection. It is revealing about human nature that the first
species resurrected by DNA technology are dangerous pathogens. I never
thought that both smallpox and polio would be the first experimentally
repeatable examples of abiogenesis. But there they are!
