ISTM that as technology "progresses" and people continue to offload
more and more tasks to machines there is a net loss of overall
intelligence, The obvious example is computation. [...]

Machines may have taken over calculation, but they have
/also/ taken over a lot of repetitive factory work, farming
activity - and so on. A rising tide of simple machines is
taking the easy jobs around the shoreline - and pushing
humanity up the intellectual mountain. Currently, humans
need their brains more than ever, IMO.

However, machine intelligence looks destined to zoom past
our own - in all areas. When that happens the mountain
we are retreating up will be entirely submerged - and
there may indeed be some kind of "meltdown".
