Natural selection can act on human culture too

"Washington, Feb 19 (ANI): Natural selection can act on human culture as
well as on genes, says a new study which shows that cultural traits
affecting survival and reproduction evolve at a different rate than
other cultural attributes."

Shouldn't this kind of selection be given a different name? I know! How
about "cultural selection"?

Nah. "Cultural selection" is an ambiguous term. It isn't clear whether
it refers to selection *on* culture, or selection *by* culture.

For example, you could say that American cultural selection selects for
supermodels who are tall and lithe and have a bouncy runway strut, while
it selects against supermodels who are short and plump and tend to
waddle down a runway.

On the other hand, the phrase "natural selection can act on human
culture" is very clear on what is doing the selecting, and what is being
selected.
