Maybe even without a special approach. IMHO the
problem with the mission was the fact that the heavy
vehicle at the back of the stone kept pushing at 7.5
km/s, thus cooking the stone thoroughly.
A lone stone would have lost speed quickly and
probably suffered only surface burns. At least
that's what centimeter-sized meteorites or fragments
found on the ground look like.
