If this is correct, it is the most important discovery regarding the

I've always thought that the key to it all is in the tRNA.
That seems to me to be the real start of it all.
You may be right about tRNA. And it is definitely the case, in all theories,
that the origin of the ribosome came long after the "real start of it all". As
you know, in my theory, life originated before there was any kind of RNA
at all.
What I think is important about this paper is this: It is the first solid,
evidence-based look at evolution in the RNA world. In fact, it is almost
the first solid look at evolution before the LUCA. And, as I wrote
several years ago, this is important because progress can only be made
by pushing the veil of ignorance backward in time from what we know
with confidence about the present and recent past. The more we know
about what early life was like - what it was made of and what it did
for a living - the more we know the less speculative become our conjectures
as to how early life originated.
(No need to make your case again as to why this is misguided, Tim. I
already know your opinions on this.)
I haven't read the paper yet, but based just on blog reports like Zimmer's
I get the impression that the transpeptidase function is one of the first functions
added. If that is true, it pretty much shoots down my own hypotheses
that the ribosome originated as a modification of a replicase or transcriptase.
And it is only when evidence makes contact with our abiogenesis hypotheses
and shoots them down that we make progress.
