Carbolic acid or phenol is solid to 43 C (110 F or so), and doesn't boil
until 182 C (350 F). It is soluble in water. Solid phenol mixed about 12
parts to one part water liquifies again. Its pH is about 3.8, which
makes it a weaker acid than acetic acid. Many fresh fruits (e.g. apples)
are more acidic than that.
Don't know how to qualify "nasty." It's used for medical purposes,
although diluted to 5% in almond oil. On the other hand, OSHA warns that
systemic exposure causes serious problems. An oral dose of just 1 gram
(1/28 oz) can be lethal to humans. Topical exposure to a strong solution
has killed a 32 year old man within 10 minutes. That definitely puts it
under my heading of nasty.
