Savant used to manufacture good vacuum products - but now that they
are part of Thermo concern they suck big way. Corporate death of good
small company. Looong delivery times, confused/incompetent sales dept,
sporadic tech support, etc. You need to contact somebody from
ThermoSavant division and get from her/him a phone number to the
actual engineer in Hollbrook in NY where they manufacture and repair
the stuff. Here is one competent custom. service person from Thermo
you can try to call: "Tania", tel. 800-972-7133 or
866-984-3766/ext.2059, FAX 740-373-6770 (attn. to Tania).
Ballast valve is a knob typicaly located on top of a pump. (It is
independent from oil filter). It lets small amount of air bleeding
into oil, removing more efficiently volatiles contaminating oil. The
trade-off is that the vacuum will worsen a bit and the pump will
produce more oil mist ("smoke") with ballast on.
Oil mist filters should last for at least a month. If lots of air gets
passed through the pump (=ie the vacuum you get is bad because of some
leak, for example or because of heavy use of your lyo), the oil mist
problem would get worse. Some systems have pumps equipped with oil
mist colletor/recirculator. Other systems simply pipe the oil mist
exhaust out into hood or vent.
Oil change - when you see the vacuum on closed lyo deteriorating. If
there is nothing hooked on lyo, the cold-trap is not overly iced-up
and your vacuum is still over 200mTorr, then oil change is probably
needed. (If vacuum stil does not improve, your pump is getting bad or
you have leak in the lyo). Also, you should change oil periodicaly,
perhaps at the beginning of every month.
Also, harass and educate the users. Do not let them use your lyo for
drying organic volatiles residues or water from unfrozen samples.
