That's because most battle-hardened Usenet-ers (a) believe in reading
material in its context and (b) know how to edit their posts. Even in
the days when everyone bottom-posted (long before Uncle Al had heard of
Usenet, btw), it was considered extremely bad form to quote 100 lines of
text to add 2 lines of your own. In addition to making it more difficult
to follow the discussion, top-posting encourages that kind of waste of
bandwidth [tm].
