This may be a possible answer from A.G Sharpe "Inorganic Chemistry"
the exact wording is:
"When a solution of coper (II) chloride is boiled with concentrated
hydrochloric acid and copper, the complex ion [CuCl2](-) is formed;
on dilution CuCl is precipitated."
The author does not mention the color of this complex which I expect
to be brown, the important word is *boil" because whosoever will boil
the reaction would first observe the dark brown color on mixing the
three reactants and as you said boiling the brown complex does not
destroy the color, this implies that the author mentions boiling for
hastening the dissolution process of copper in HCl; the color of that
reaction mixture should be brown.
Hope that you will find the method of preparing K2[CuCl4] and K[CuCl2]
somewhere. I couldn't.
