I'm pretty sure that it will work to a significant yield, however I
speak on behalf of the University org. chem textbook
(Solomons)...which is probably not in error
My point is that, although your criticisms make some theoretical sense
(yes nitrate groups activate toward nucleophilic reactions), I'm
familiar with many examples similiar in nature. Nitrate is
frequently used as blocking groups, and even more one's ability to
convert them to many other functional groups makes this procedure
useful.
I'm pretty sure that this is a standard, easy-level textbook
problem....Does'nt need too much thought experiment.
Perhaps you can suggest a better procedure.
