Different brands (or the same brand of different ages) have different
amp-hours left in them. The one(s) with the smaller amp-hours completely
discharge before the others are dead and become reverse phased. If the
battery does not have a steel shell, then upon continuation of bias the
zink jacket will completely eat through spilling the contents. If it does
have a steel jacket, then continued bias will result in the release of
gases that can cause rupture of the jacket.
