the reason why they do not live forever lies probably in the telomers.
telomers are the ends of chromosomes- every time the dna gets copied those
telomers get shorter. if they are smaller than 4 basepairs the cell usually
dies.
an enzyme called "telomerase" can repair the shortened dna, although not in
all body cells and not perfectly back to the original.. thus, over time,
some of the telomers get shorter and shorter until the cells die (which
causes disfunction of the organs those cells belong to.. and most probably
death).
