It's been thought of. Lower vertebrates often do not have maximum
lifetimes. Fish that don't die of disease or predation just keep on
growin', adding new vertebrae and myotomes, but at a slower rate as
time goes on.

Invertebrates are probably similar, but in the sea, just about
everything has natural enemies.
