This is missing the point. I am certainly more than capable of
teaching her first year high school German with no reference materials
aside from those in my head, if necessary. There are two goals here.
The first is to learn the language. Most any reference, of which we
have an abundance at home, will suffice for this purpose. The second
goal is for her to get a passing grade in the class. In this case the
particular textbook used in the class provides the best option. Her
last vocabulary list that she was expected to study for a quiz included
the slang for clothing 'die Klamotten'. As far as I can tell, she has
yet to learn the more formal 'die Kleidung'. Although I am familiar
with both words, what is the likelihood that I would have introduced
her to it on my own at the correct time for her quiz? Yes, I will be
searching for the text to buy, but I should not have to do this.
