I would not agree with anything that has been posted so far, but would
expand on it, much as the field of chemical engineering has expanded.
The field was started largely to support the oil industry (and it still
does to a great extent). As a result, much of the class work has
evolved to help with those jobs, which do pay quite nicely by the way.
Chemical engineering now has moved well beyond this to include
polymers(extrusion, injection molding, coatings), biotechnology,
nanocomposites, semiconductor processing and other areas that you will
most likely not be exposed to in school, certainly not to any great
detail.
Think broadly. If you get enough of the AP class credits, go for a
second degree in another technical field - biology, math, CSci,
electrical/mechanical/biomedical engineering,...The future doesn't lie
in making the current hole deeper, but in making it wider.
