There is no simple way. the easiest is by electrolysis using a device
called a Nelson cell.
In the older method you cited. A suspension of slaked lime is treated with
sodium carbonate.
Ca(OH)2 + Na2CO3 ----> CaCO3 + 2NaOH
The calcium carbonate precipitates and is filtered off.
The filtrate (NaOH) is evaporated to dryness.
If for some reason you want to make soap in instead of buying you may
consider using potash (Potassium carbonate (K2CO3) )
instead.
An old fashion way to make potash is to fill a bucket half full of water and
then add enough fireplace ashes to it so that it is 3/4 full of the
ash/water mixture. After the mixture has set over night filter out the
ashes using an old cotton cloth pouring the liquid into a stainless steel
container. If necessary filter again through large coffee
filters. The liquid will be caustic (a strong base) so use rubber gloves
and protect your eyes.
As a note of caution: Most methods of soak making found on the web
will if followed result in a product that you would not want to put on your
skin. The best thing to do is to take a chemistry course. Second best is to
go
to a library and look up books on soap making (saponification).
If you are tempted to use the web restrict your search to url's of edu
or gov.
