Copper salts are not harmless!

I assume you know the necessary safety measures (hence no
responsibility). Make a saturated solution of copper sulfate and add
concentrated sodium hydroxide dropwise (careful not to add excess) till
all the blue color disappears and the solution becomes brown with
precipitates. Heat gently, cool and and filter the black CuO, after
washing several times with water. Dissolve the solid in minimum amount
of HCl; heat over a water bath to make a saturated solution and allow
crystallization (which would not be easy in this case keeping in mind
that copper chloride absorbs water from atmosphere!).

True.
