SI did say that given enough time under the right conditions thenthe
reaction would occur. If "enough time" to convert everyting to iron, or
at least to elements heavier than hydrogen, is more than 15 billion
years, so be it.

Incidentally, not all will necessarily be iron. Other nuclei exist in
which the binding energy per nucleon is less than that of iron, but if
they were to break up in some way the binding energy would be less
still. Thus Ni woudl be more stable than Fe+He, so even iron can be
made to react further.
