Thanks for the suggestions. The problem is two different books say 2
different things.
John McMurry (4th edition) says acetate ion has 2 resonance forms. Stephen
Bresnick says it has 3 resonance forms. I am not sure which one I should
believe. I want to believe that CH3COO- has only 2 resonance forms because
the 3rd resonance form (the one with a carbocation and 2 negatively charged
oxygen atoms) doesn't make the central carbon (i.e. the carbocation) octet.
What I want to believe may NOT be correct..
