Re: Finish Chemistry Ph.D. or Not!?!?!

I have just finished the first year of my Ph.D. in biochemistry, andI
have no clue what I want to do with my life. I don't mind the research
I am doing right now, but I definatly can't see myself doing it for the
rest of my life. I am just wondering what kind of jobs are out there
for Ph.D. chemists other then academics (research based), or research
in industry. Even though I've made it this far in my education I feel
as though I have never been told my options, and at this level most
people are couldn't imagine a life without research. I know the basics
like patent law, teaching at a community college, etc but I would
really appreciate some other ideas, and how these jobs are actually
obtained. Is there any extra training required?
I was also wondering if it's a good idea to actually finish a Ph.D. in
chemistry if you don't want to do research. Does it hurt you in any way
when looking for jobs?
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!!
I don't advocate anyone setting out on a career he won't like, especially one that takes
constant learning. ACS has information on careers that chemistry grads can follow, and
many don't require a Ph.D. Start by reading the file at
http://pubs.acs.org/cen/coverstory/7946/pdf/7946employment5.pdf.
You may want to take a year leave from grad school to explore some options.
