Well, I suppose I should explain a bit farther. I am working on a
project which involves the manufature of chalk from deposits of calcite
(CaCO3). Calcite will work as chalk, however on most blackboards it
will simply scratch the surface. Modern chalk is generally made out of
gypsum, so it is much softer.
