You can't have a mathematical 'explanation' of anything physical!
You can show mathematically that equilibrium is a consequence of the 1st 2 laws of
thermodynamics:
1. Energy is conserved
2. You can't lower the temperature of a single body and convert all the thermal energy to
mechanical energy.

If you believe these are correct statements of how the world works, then mathematics
shows you that equilibrium must result.
