Galvanized cook tub

I was grilling some steak, potatoes, and corn in a metal tub sold as a patio
planter. It is a standard galvanized steel tub and worked fine with a batch
of
matchlight charcoal briquettes. The next morning I noticed that the shiny
coating had melted off of the inside and had dripped down and slumped on the
outside. Now I'm worried that some fumes or lead or tin or something got
into the food.

What is that coating? Was this a mistake I should never repeat? It was a
compact and easy setup to transport for a camping trip. I'd like to do it
again. Don't want to be paranoid.
