I'd start off simple if I were you. There are plenty of sites with
kitchen chemistry for kids out there. Don't be put off 'cause they say
they're for kids, you have to start somewhere, and you want to build a
skill set as you read through your texts.
Lots of people on sci.chem have made crystal growing a hobby, start
with rock candy on a dowel -- Starbucks is selling those to
stir/sweeten their overpriced coffe. Make your own and show off a bit
to your guests. You can grow chrome alum crystals, or preciptated
crystals in gel media, so that you have something to discuss over
coffee.
On the subject of coffee, the analytical equipment to qualify and
quantify caffeine is more than a few thousand USD$ -- more like 5-10
thousand each. But if you're obsessed with chormatography (I know I
am), you can get started. Try paper chromatography, or read up on how
people used to make starch and silica TLC plates. If you can separate
pen ink reproducibly, then you can look up what Tswett did -- plant
pigments in chalk filled tubes, simple, and you can use analytical
instruments installed in your head.
