Hopefully Not Looking For Unicorns

First off, I am a junior in high school currently taking chemistry, and
I absolutely love the coursework. I took biology and got a perfect
score on the state exam, and although I didn't adore the class, the
subject matter did peak my interest.
Now, after much soul-searching, I've come to the conclusion that
biochemistry may be the direction for me. Tulane University had
recruited me (I get letters from the president), and since they are
very acclaimed in the field, majoring in biochemistry and either
getting a doctorate in it or pharm. engineering is a certain
possibility (I live in ground zero of Katrina's devastation, and New
Orleans hardly got anything compared to my city, so I'm not worried
about student life or anything.... all good parts of NOLA are fine.).
With that said, are there jobs in biochemistry?
I feel like I'm taking a big step in making this choice, but I have to
be practical and consider things like job growth. Who here is a
gainfully employed biochemist? Are you content with your choice?
I"m just afraid of spending eight years at university, only to find
myself living in the woods somewhere muttering about polycyclic
aromatic hydrocarbons.
