| I'm cleaning up a very old (75 years) all-metal chrome plated flashlite
| (5-battery) and it has some copper sulfate around brass/copper eyelets.
|
| Is there a common household substance that could be used on q-tips to
| clean/dissolve the copper sulfate and wipe/rinse away? Would it take
| an alkali (oven cleaner, etc.) or acid (muratic acid brick cleaner,
| vinegar, etc.), or petro solvent (turpentine, acetone, etc.). Also,
| would Copper Sulfate be considered an acid or alkali, or something
| else?

Mechanically a pencil eraser will work wonders.
If you can still find it in a hardware store oxalic acid as a water solution should
work. (Oxalic acid was traditional used to remove copper stains from porcelain
sinks/tubs. Some boiled rhubarb leaves to clean pots. NOT ALUMINIUM ones).
Observe all precautions on the box.

The explosion removed the windows,
the door and most of the chimney.
It was the sort of thing you expected in
the Street of Alchemists. The neighbours
preferred explosions, which were at least
identifiable and soon over. They were better
than the smells, which crept up on you.
