If Uncle Al had been trying to be helpful, he would have done something
helpful like limiting himself to a subject that he knows something about.

From my observations over about 15 years, his main area of expertise *is*
organic chemistry, particularly synthesis, whether you care to admit it or
not.

What HCl? There was no evidence for HCl in the OP's sample, at least, not
according to the NMR spectrum he reported.

As Al pointed out, and as has been my experience over the last 25 years, HCl
is present in all CH/DCl3 unless steps are taken to remove it. Frequently
the HCl is hard to see because it exchanges with the water that is also
almost invariably in CH/DCl3. And the HCl could have been partly or totally
consumed, for example in oxyhydrochlorinating ethylene to make DCE.
