I need to produce basic copper carbonate, and from what I can
remember this could be done by "leaching" it with ammonia and
ammonium carbonate and precipitate it by boiling the liquor.
I should have added that copper oxide is also valuable, in fact more so
than the carbonate unless it's of repeatable composition. Basic copper
carbonate can be anything from 2Cu(CO3)*Cu(OH)2 to CuCO3*2Cu(OH)2
depending on the conditions, so a simple precitpitation of a soluble salt
will not give a consistent product. The forementioned leaching-process
were supposed to produce a consistent product, but when I tried it it
only gave oxide upon boiling.
You can use electrolysis to do it. For the Solution you can use Sodium
Carbonate, and then use copper anodes and cathodes. The anode will
deterate and form Copper Carbonate. Some copper will be on the
cathode, Keep it it might come in handy.
I really want to avoid using sodium salts, as it is intended for
pyrotechnical use where even traces of sodium can wash out the blue
color. Potassoum salts should work but are not as easy to get hold of as
ammonium carbonate.
