There's a fixed duty per litre - which the gov like to change each
year, only upwards of course! - although they have just postponed
(not cancelled!) this spring's increase for 6 months. *Then* to the
fuel cost + duty add VAT (value added tax) to the lot @ 17.5% at the
point of sale - so that means we pay VAT on the Duty....

How else do you expect the government to pay for the things it thinks
you
need? We pay income tax on the money taken to pay Social Security and
Medicare taxes. And Congress has a fund to settle suits against
their members
for such things as sexual harrassment.

Throw all the bums out. We did that a couple hundred years ago, but
we've let
more back in.

(I know - off-topic, but what the heck.)

LOL. Bad luck - our National Insurance (which [allegedly] pays for our
"free" health service and old age pensions) is not taxed at all. The
employer takes the gross pay, deducts the NI, then works out the tax on the
rest. I think it's been that way since NI was created (in 1948).
(I put free in quotes, beacuse it's not 100% free - there are fixed {but
very low] fees for medicines and dental work - depending on ones age and
means to pay)
