Gave up using house vac for distillations or solvent stripping years ago.
Just when you have got a nice boil up rate, some one always opens/closes a
tap somewhere else (and with 40 fume cupboards in the lab...) - either the
boil up stops, or goes like *%&%^! - even known to empty a packed column
into the receiver... We only use all teflon DiVac pumps now - one per
distillation, the better ones giving down to 2mbar.
