Biodiesel is a stronger solvent than standard mineral diesel and so
all the accumulated gunge in the tank and pipes from years of driving
dissolves into the new fuel. When the biodiesel is pumped through to
the fuel filter these particles are deposited potentially blocking the
filter. Shortly after starting to use biodiesel it is usually
necessary to replace the fuel filter at least once. After that the
pipes and tank are clean and fuel filters will only need replacing at
standard service intervals and you will have a much cleaner car.
Biodiesel's solvent powers also make it hard on any old style rubber
piping. All rubber piping and other rubber parts in contact with fuel
should be immediately replaced with modern hard-wearing long life
nylon pipes to prevent problems. Most modern cars no longer have true
rubber parts and so this may not be an issue.
I have recently produced my first batch of Biodiesel and intend
running my ageing Volvo 940 on this fuel also I intend to power my
2002 2liter for Transit on the same.
Can anyone out there in Cyberspace tell me what rubber seals and pipes
will need changing because of the cleaning solvent power effects of
this fuel.
The simplest approach would be retro-active rather than pro-active.
Wait for signs of deterioration and then replace. You will incure less
labor costs that way but a lot more than if you did not make the
switch to biodiesel. Having said that, what are you going to do when
it gets really cold? When it gets cold biodiesel gells and it will not
flow. Your car won't start. Remember that the diesel engine was
originally invented to burn peanut oil. Petroleum replaced peanut oil
because it is more environmentally robust.
Environmental concerns come in two forms, concern about what effect
you have on the environment and concern about what the environment can
do to you, your possessions and your lifestyle. With the later day
growth in the ideology of environmentalism, the former has come to
replace the latter. Not a wise or balanced approach.
Your question relates to the interface between technology and
economics. From an economic point of view a better technolgical
solution for you would be to purchase a new vehicle which is designed
top down to burn bio-diesel. Rather than waste your labor in constant
modification and repair of your Volvo 940, you would be better to
waste your labor as a wage-slave so that you have sufficient
purchasing power to purchase a new vehicle designed to burn bio-
diesel.
I have no idea where you can buy a new vehicle designed to burn
straight biodiesel. However, it is interesting to note that one of the
architechs of the Kyoto Protocol, is Maurice Strong, who is now in
China selling Chinese made automobiles. If there is anyone who has an
ideological and economic interest in selling you a better biodiesel
automobile it would be Maurice Strong. I cannot tell you how to
contact Maurice Strong but maybe he reads this newsgroup.
