Hi, I am a high school science teacher. I am looking for a dye that
will dissolve in water (to some extent) but them segregate to an
immiscible oil layer.
I had a demo once involving a little iodine dissolved in KI solution.
The result is a brown solution. When an organic solvent is added, the
iodine is extracted into the solvent, coloring it purple.
A dye would be safer, but nothing comes to mind at the moment.
Histology texts segregate stains according to whether they dissolved
in fat or water.

Actually, I am not too worried about tincture of iodine. Obviously it
is poisonous and needs to be handled properly, I do think tghis is a
good solution (pun intended).
