I found adding too much iodine spoiled the effect. I suspect that the
type of oil makes a difference too. I used cheap vegitable oil this
time, I will try baby oil next time.
Maybe something lighter in color and more intensely
hydrophobic would work better. BBQ lighter fluid
comes to mind (actually, gasoline came to mind
first, but there are obvious problems with that).
Now that I think about it, I do recall a reference
in an old book to work in which a researcher
used gasoline to extract carotenoids from algae.
I believe he was working in Venezuela before 1940,
so that may have guided him in his choice of solvent.
Gasoline has the advantage you can evaporate it to
concentrate the carotenoids. Some other light
solvent would be preferable, of course, because
of the toxic octane boosters in gasoline.
Dry cleaning fluid might be a good choice, if you
can get it.
