Postdoctoral research position at the School of Informatics,
University of Edinburgh

Applications are invited for a post-doctoral researcher to work within
the School of Informatics on an EU funded project: Spatial-temporal
Patterns for Action-oriented perception in Roving robots (SPARK). The
main scientific objective of the SPARK project is to formulate a new
methodology for artificial cognitive systems, based on a
spatial-temporal pattern formation process. This will be implemented
on novel computational hardware, and used by a robot to integrate
information from different senses to produce appropriate actions.

The researcher will be based in the Institute of Perception, Action
and Behaviour and the Institute for Adaptive and Neural Computation,
under the supervision of Dr. Barbara Webb and Prof. David Willshaw.
The primary objective will be to derive, from the current
neurobiological literature, suitable models of biological perception
for action, within the framework of dynamic, self-organising
phenomenon. A particular focus will be the problem of sensor
fusion. Later stages of the project will contribute to the design and
implementation of the robotic test-bed for evaluating these models.

Applicants for the post should have a PhD in an area related to
computational modelling of neuroscience, a good knowledge of sensory
processing in biological systems, some familiarity with mathematics of
self-organising systems, and ideally some experience with hardware,
e.g. parallel computing devices and/or robots.

The post is on the AR1A scale (£19,460 - £29,128 per annum). The post
is available immediately and will run till September 2007.
