I believe that senile dementia exacerbates the effects of moderate to
heavy consumption of alcohol, by which I mean that an alcoholic
suffering senile dementia will require less alcohol to become
intoxicated.
So it may be that it is intoxication that is affecting the functioning
of the brain and permitting easier recollection of information in long
term memory etc., but it cannot be said that intoxication is "undoing"
the effects of senility.
I am not well educated in psychology so this is merely a hypothesis.
