Teaching How To Read & Write Without Pencil and Notebook

Is it possible to teach reading and writing skills
to adults who don't know how to read and write?
Just making them sit in front of the computer, giving them
a few instructions (how to use the mouse, click, etc.) and
let them use a special program designed to teach them
how to read and write-using-the-keyboard. Imagine this
kind of system.
Two questions:
1. Have you ever seen such a program? If yes, can you
provide me the pointers, if not do you believe such
a program is feasible?
2. What would be the consequences of learning to write
using keyboard without knowing how to hold a pen, how
to write down on a notebook, etc.?
Let the brainstorm begin... ;-)
