Every college level sensation and perception text book will
explain it in depth.
It's amazing that all the eye ever sees is light, or reflections
of light. Color vision is wavelength dependent, perceived depth
is accomplished because we have stereoptic vision, and almost
all else is context-sensitive interpretation. Fascinating stuff,
and we learn more about perception all the time through the
publication of empirical research.
